Discovering the iArt: Inspiration and Applications - iSmashPhone iPhone Blog

Fingerpainting

David Hockney

One of the most famous Britain’s artists, David Hockney has worked in numerous art forms and mediums in his lengthy career. Now he creates mini masterpieces using his iPhone and the Brushes app. 'I lie in bed and send illustrated art lectures to friends and also my own iPhone paintings,' said Hockney. 'I like to draw flowers by hand on the iPhone and send them out to friends so they get fresh flowers. And my flowers last!'

Susan Murtaugh

Being a classically trained artist with considerable professional experience, Susan Murtaugh now uses the iPod Touch as the main medium for her art. With this digital canvas and Brushes application, Susan creates truly amazing paintings, some of which can be seen below.

Beach Walk

In Susan’s own words, this work didn’t take much time at all. The artist felt the moment and voila – in a few minutes a chilling autumn afternoon is captured in the painting. Fantastic.

Susan’s husband Phil is her frequent model. Here is Ms. Murtaugh’s comment on this sketch: “This is my hubby, politely asking me to stop brushing and make him dinner”.

Matthew Watkins

Matthew Watkins is the first artist who exhibited his iPhone fingerprints in public. The one-man iPhone art show took place at Apple Retailer in Bari, Italy. Besides forex and paper prints, the visitors could see two handmade Nepal carpets (!) designed from Watkins’ digital paintings. Watkins mainly uses the Brushes app, which he discovered early in 2009.  The artist shows versatile talent indeed -- he has created over 300 images by now, and continues to explore new styles and techniques in fingerpainting. Matthew often adds a few lines to his art pieces so that you can find a whole story behind the image.

Mr. Fairaday

“Mr. Fairaday was always in a hurry, but never such a hurry that he would not don a rather long and pointy hat before leaving the house each morning.”

Jorge Colombo

Jorge Colombo is probably the most famous iArtist so far. His sketches wound up on the cover of

New Yorker magazine twice: (this past June and September), causing a major buzz in the worldwide media. Iconic New York spots captured in his “street painting” (Jorge prefers the Brushes app as well) convey the city atmosphere and spirit perfectly, and you can feel it in his drawings. Nobody sees an artist in Jorge when he walks in the street playing with his iPhone; he can work anonymously and catch the moment just as it is. Head to the artist’s personal website http://www.jorgecolombo.com/drawings/index.htm to see more of his amazing sketches.

"I like to have my studio in my pocket," said Jorge Colombo in the interview with ABCNews.com.

Mike Miller

Now comes another talented artist devoted to the iPod + Brushes fingerpainting, and you can view more drawings that will send shivers down your spine. Mike Miller is a web dude (as he calls himself) from Boulder, Colorado, whose works get heaps of positive feedback on Flickr from both fellow artists and visitors. Sophisticated paintings with a sleek psychedelic touch that won’t leave you cold either.

“…traditional painting doesn't have an undo button”, remarked Mike.

Xoan Baltar

Like many others, Spanish illustrator Xoan Baltar discovered the Brushes app -- and therefore, iPhone fingerpainting -- not long ago. Today he is among the brightest talents in iPhone art and his name is well-known far beyond the Spanish borders. His artwork was positively commented by the Brushes producer Steve Sprang, and now these guys are working together on the next version of this mesmerizing app.

“I like to work with all kinds of materials, but digital art is more versatile when it comes to finishes or color proofs — and is much faster!”, said Xoan in one of the interviews.

Jose Andres Guijarro Ponce

Jose Andres Guijarro Ponce is a gynecologist from Cuenca in Spain -- proof positive that iArt can reveal and expand the creative nature of a person. Many of Ponce’s paintings are done with the Brushes app and iPhone 3G, however the artist works with other applications (such as Layers). View more of the artist’s sensual fingerprints on Flickr.

Photography

Modern photographers don’t drop behind the artists when it comes to using iPhone in their creative work. Recently, the iPhone beat Canon's EOS Digital Rebel Xti as the leading source of Flickr uploads. Having a tiny device in your pocket or purse, you can not only make decent photos wherever you are, but also edit, process and share them right at the same place. Such indispensible capabilities, as well as the very comfort the device brings to the user, appeal to everybody who has a passion for art and beauty. Below you can see a collection of creative inspirational photographs shot and edited with the iPhone.
